He was the lead finalist, perhaps even the lone finalist, but he's out and someone else is in. The N.A.A.C.P. has chosen a new President and it isn’t
Rev. Frederick Haynes III of Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas.
What happened? The answer could be, and should be, his relationship
with Rev. Jeremiah Wright of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. His support for the radical "spiritual leader" of Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama will undoubtedly come into play as time plays out.
"I was told after March that I was not only the lead finalist, but
the only finalist," he said adding, "Something happened between
then and perhaps the May meeting."
Whats being said publically was
his desire to remain in Dallas at Friendship West. However, there are reasons
to believe this is simply window dressing. Dr. Haynes said he told the N.A.A.C.P. that it
was possible for him to be both the Pastor of Friendship West and their President, with
no red flags going up. This was before he lost the job. As Haynes said, "Something happened between then
and perhaps the May meeting."
The clearest explanation has to be the bond shared between the radical
Rev. Wright and the supportive Haynes. Wright made an appearance at FWBC shortly after his interview with Bill Moyers, with
a stamp of approval coming from Haynes with his comment "[Wright]
represented the best of America this past week on Bill Moyers." He has been steadfast in his support, and word surely made its way to the N.A.A.C.P.
It is clear that Rev. Jeremiah Wright is
radioactive, rightfully so, when it comes to who can be around him. For a man to
say G-D-America and then say it was taken out of context, there is no
acceptable context for those kind of words. Saying the chicken has come home to roost
when describing 9/11, in essence saying we had it coming, has no place in the
public discourse as well.
The N.A.A.C.P. has chosen to go with a less radioactive
President, thankfully so, let’s hope it’s a sign the words of its organization are less
radioactive now as well. We're not betting on it.
